Common Eye Problems in La Jolla

As an optometrist, I see a variety of eye problems in my patients in La Jolla. While some of these issues are minor and can be easily treated, others can have serious consequences if left untreated. Here are some of the most common eye problems that I see in my patients in La Jolla.

Dry Eye Syndrome

Dry eye syndrome is a common condition that occurs when the eyes do not produce enough tears or when the tears evaporate too quickly. Symptoms can include redness, burning, fluctuations in vision, and itching, and can be exacerbated by environmental factors such as air conditioning, wind, or prolonged computer use.

Cataracts

Cataracts are a common eye condition that typically affects people over the age of 60. They occur when the lens of the eye becomes cloudy, causing blurred vision and difficulty seeing at night. While cataracts are typically treatable with surgery, they can cause significant vision loss if left untreated.

Glaucoma

Glaucoma is a group of eye diseases that can cause vision loss and blindness if left untreated. It occurs when fluid builds up in the eye, causing pressure to increase and damage to the optic nerve. Symptoms may include headaches, eye pain, and tunnel vision.

Macular Degeneration

Macular degeneration is a condition that occurs when the macula, the part of the retina responsible for central vision, deteriorates. This can cause blurred or distorted vision, and can eventually lead to vision loss. Age-related macular degeneration is the most common form of the condition.

Conjunctivitis

Conjunctivitis, also known as pink eye, is a common eye condition that is characterized by inflammation of the conjunctiva, the thin layer of tissue that covers the white part of the eye. It can be caused by allergies, infections, or irritants, and can result in redness, itching, and discharge.

Strabismus

Strabismus is a condition that occurs when the eyes are misaligned and do not work together properly. This can cause double vision, depth perception problems, and may even result in amblyopia (lazy eye) if left untreated.

Refractive Errors

Refractive errors, such as nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism, are common eye conditions that occur when the shape of the eye does not allow light to focus correctly on the retina. These conditions can be corrected with glasses, contact lenses, or refractive surgery.
There are a variety of common eye problems that I see in my patients in La Jolla. While some of these issues are minor and easily treatable, others can have serious consequences if left untreated. If you are experiencing any symptoms or have concerns about your eye health, it’s important to schedule an appointment with an optometrist as soon as possible. By taking care of your eyes and seeking prompt treatment when necessary, you can help maintain optimal vision and eye health.
