Here at the office of Jesse A. Camen, O.D., our doctor is dedicated to the treatment of eye emergencies and infections. Many things can cause pink or red eyes, so it is important to determine the cause before you start to treat your infected eye.

The most common infection we see is conjunctivitis caused by an adenovirus (the common cold). There are other types of bacteria and viruses that can cause eye infections. Fungal infections are also seen, though they are not as common.

Underlying systemic health problems can also cause a red eye. In these cases, it is extremely important to inform your primary care provider and attain any additional testing deemed necessary.

One should never try to self-medicate a pink or red eye. These are ocular emergencies with implicated risks of permanent and irreversible vision loss. These conditions require stat medical attention by an approved medical professional.
